A Visit to Venus: Understanding Women

What's going on inside the women in your life, and how can you show up for it?

Module 2 went to Mars. This module goes to Venus, with the same care and the same structure.

There's a woman in your life: a partner, a mother, a sister, a daughter, a date. Some of what she needs she has probably told you directly. Some of it she has hinted at, hoped you'd notice, or decided wasn't worth asking for. Some of what she carries you may never have seen, because much of it happens in her head: the list at 9:47 p.m., the text to her sister saying leaving now, the second-guessing before she says something direct at work.

This module is a guided tour of that territory. It covers what many women need and often hint at, why talking things through matters and why things come up again, and the weight many women carry without mentioning it. As in Module 2, treat it like a travel guide: full of useful generalizations, with plenty of locals who don't fit them. Every lesson has a Not You? note.

Who this module is for. It's for everyone.

  • Men read it to understand the women they love, and to learn how to show up for them.
  • Women read it to check it against their own lives. Where it fits, you may find words for things you've felt but never said. Where it doesn't, the Not You? notes are for you.

The Driving Question

What's going on inside the women in your life, and how can you show up for it?

Gut Answer

Before Lesson 3.1, write three sentences in your journal. Think of one woman you know well. What do you think she needs most from the people close to her, and what do you think she carries that nobody sees? If you're a woman, answer about yourself. Date it.

What You'll Be Able to Do

By the end of this module you'll be able to:

  • name needs that many women share, especially feeling heard, being prioritized, and being reassured, and explain why they're about intimacy, not neediness;
  • understand talking as a way of thinking, know when to listen and when to help solve, and see why feelings that come up again usually mean something is unfinished, not that she's nagging;
  • break the loop between a repeated request and the "nagging" label;
  • recognize the weight many women carry: the mental load, the safety calculations, the pressure to be perfect, the double bind around being direct, and the job of managing everyone's feelings;
  • take on part of that weight in a way that actually lightens it.

Time

About 1.75–2 hours: three lessons of 30–35 minutes each, plus the check-in.
