A Visit to Mars: Understanding Men

What's going on inside the men in your life, and how can you reach it?

There's a man in your life, whether a partner, a father, a brother, a son or a date, and some of what goes on inside him never gets said out loud. It isn't that nothing is happening in there. Module 1 showed that men feel as much as women do and show less of it. Many men were also taught early that some feelings are best kept to themselves, and some never got the words for them.

This module is a guided tour of that quieter territory: what many men need but rarely ask for, what's going on when they go silent, and the weight many of them carry without mentioning it. Treat it the way you'd treat a travel guide to a real place, full of useful generalizations that don't fit every local. Every lesson has a Not You? note, and it matters here more than anywhere else in the course.

Who this module is for. It's for everyone.

  • Women read it to understand the men they love, and to learn how to reach them.
  • Men read it to check it against their own lives. Where it fits, you may find words for things you've felt but never said. Where it doesn't, the Not You? notes are for you.

Module 3 then does exactly the same for women, with the same care and the same structure.

The Driving Question

What's going on inside the men in your life, and how can you reach it?

Gut Answer

Before Lesson 2.1, write three sentences in your journal. Think of one man you know well. What do you think he needs most from the people close to him, and what do you think he'd never say out loud? If you're a man, you can answer about yourself. Date it.

What You'll Be Able to Do

By the end of this module you'll be able to:

  • name needs that many men share, especially appreciation, respect and a sense of competence, and explain why criticism of competence can hurt more than it seems to;
  • recognize love that's expressed through doing: fixing, providing and shared activity. It's easy to miss if you're only listening for words;
  • tell the difference between healthy withdrawal, like processing, recharging or calming down, and stonewalling, and know what helps with each;
  • recognize the weight many men carry: pressure to provide, the rule against looking weak, shrinking friendships, and depression that doesn't look like sadness;
  • invite a man to open up in ways that actually work.

Time

The module takes about 1.75–2 hours: three lessons of 30–35 minutes each, plus the check-in.
